Buffalo Bill Museum on Lookout Mountain, Golden, CO

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave exists to preserve the memory of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. It is located on Lookout Mountain at the elevation of 7,374 feet, one of the larger foothills overlooking Golden, Colorado.

You can see North and South Table Mountain from here.

Looking into the mountains
On June 3, 1917, Cody was buried on Colorado's Lookout Mountain in Golden.

William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody (February 26, 1846 – January 10, 1917) was an American soldier, bison hunter and showman. One of the most colorful figures of the American Old West, Buffalo Bill became famous for the Wild West shows he organized with cowboy themes, which he toured in Great Britain and Europe as well as the United States. South Valley Park, Golden, CO

South Valley Park is located in Jefferson County, CO, directly at the border of foothills. It is barely 10 minutes from Littleton, CO and yet it is quit and picturesque offering a perfect escape from the city.

The park features 8 miles of trails. We started hiking Coyote Song Trail which connects with Swallow Trail after 1.5 mile that loops around back to the parking lot.

The highlight of South Valley Park is the red rock formations along the valley. They are somewhat similar to formations in Red Rocks Park. The park is a geologist dreamland as it has both the Fountain (red rocks) and Lyons Formations (yellow rocks behind) that are between 290 and 296 million years old.

There is very minimal elevation gain in this park, making it a good choice for a quick and easy hike or trail run.

Archaeologists have discovered evidence that the South Valley was inhabited by hunter-gatherers 12,000-10,000 years BC.

Camping at Stillwater Campground, Granby, CO

This was our first camping experience in Colorado. We headed to Granby, CO, nestled in the majestic Rocky Mountain Valley at an elevation of 7,935 ft, surrounded by Rocky Mountain National Park with breathtaking views of the Continental Divide.

Stillwater campground is part of the Arapaho National Recreation Area and is the largest campground on the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests. The sites can be reserved on recreation.gov.

The campground is located next to Lake Granby, the largest reservoir in the Arapaho National Recreation Area and the third largest body of water in Colorado.

We got very lucky because our tent site was on the top of the hill facing the lake. The views were magnificent.

There are currently no trees at the campground as they were cut down due to pine beetle infestation. New trees have been planted though. We were concerned not to have any shade but it was not an issue. The big plus is that nothing obstracts amazing views of the mountains and the lake.
