South Valley Park is located in Jefferson County, CO, directly at the border of foothills. It is barely 10 minutes from Littleton, CO and yet it is quit and picturesque offering a perfect escape from the city.
The park features 8 miles of trails. We started hiking Coyote Song Trail which connects with Swallow Trail after 1.5 mile that loops around back to the parking lot.
The highlight of South Valley Park is the red rock formations along the valley. They are somewhat similar to formations in Red Rocks Park. The park is a geologist dreamland as it has both the Fountain (red rocks) and Lyons Formations (yellow rocks behind) that are between 290 and 296 million years old.
There is very minimal elevation gain in this park, making it a good choice for a quick and easy hike or trail run.
Archaeologists have discovered evidence that the South Valley was inhabited by hunter-gatherers 12,000-10,000 years BC.
